Thursday Night Film Screening
February 3, 2010 · Leave a Comment
7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Thursday, February 4
Thornbrough Building
Don’t miss a special screening of a brand new film from Leonie Sandercock and Giovanni Attili entitled Finding Our Way: Healing Canada’s Apartheid, a three-part film dealing with the “inconvenient truth” of Canada’s apartheid.
The film is four years in the making. Sandercock and Attili have been editing, painstakingly, for the past two and a half years in collaboration with the two First Nations communities featured in the film as well as with other non-Native communities. Each rough cut received feedback from the communities in a unique and truly collaborative film-making process.
Sandercock told CAPS, “we are now just at the end of the first stage, the making of the film, and are about to launch into the second stage, the ‘action’ part of the research project: we are currently organising three one-day workshop/screenings back in these communities. These will then serve as ‘pilots’ for further workshops in similar communities in [the] region, and then beyond”. The two filmmakers also hope to direct a curriculum around the film with the First Nations Education Steering Committee in British Columbia.
The film has been sent to the CBC as well as a number of film festivals for review.

Exciting line up of speakers announced
October 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment
The 2010 CAPS-ACEAU Conference in Guelph will feature an impressive line up of speakers from across Canada including planners, academics and provocative thinkers from related sectors. All are tasked with sharing their progressive ideas for the future of planning with students on the verge of becoming professionals themselves. Session themes include planning in First Nations, multiculturalism, climate change, healthy communities, sustainability and transportation, local food and agriculture, and international planning.
The conference’s closing keynote speaker is the award-winning professor, author, and film- maker, Dr. Leonie Sandercock. Leonie is a Professor in community and cross-cultural planning in the School of Community & Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia. She has published eleven books, including Towards Cosmopolis: Planning for Multicultural Cities; the edited collection Making the Invisible Visible: a multicultural history of planning and Cosmopolis 2: Mongrel Cities of the 21st Century. The conference will also air Leonie’s most recent documentary made in partnership with Giovanni Attili. The film, entitled Finding our Way: Healing Canada’s Apartheid, tells the story of two First Nations in north central British Columbia and their struggle for healing and revitalization.
Dr. Sandeep Agrawal from Ryerson University and Dr. Mohammad Qadeer from Queen’s University in Ontario will join Dr. Sandercock and students who are engaging in this area in an interactive panel discussion on planning for multiculturalism. Together they bring a rich understanding of how best to plan for vibrant multicultural cities, as well as knowledge of related issues such as ethnic enclaves; immigration and settlement; spatial and social segregation and inclusion; and faith-based communities.

Welcome, from U of G’s CIP Rep
October 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment
A message from Katarina Vuckovic, University of Guelph’s Canadian Institute of Planners student representative:
A warm welcome to incoming Rural Planning and Development Students! This is promising to be a memorable year for all future planners at the University of Guelph! In particular, there is much excitement brewing around the 2010 Canadian Association of Planning Students – L’Association Canadienne des Étudiants en Aménagement et en Urbanisme (CAPS-ACEAU) Conference – which Guelph is proudly hosting this year from February 4–6. The theme for this year’s gathering will be Progressive Planning and students are busy organizing an exciting list of presenters and workshop themes that will address today’s pertinent social, environmental, economic, and cultural issues. For this conference and for other events, students are looking at collaborating more closely with Landscape Architecture and Capacity Development students in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development in order to integrate the different perspectives from these related disciplines. It is exciting to be in this field at such a critical time globally, and to have such rich opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives— in reshaping our profession to meet local and global challenges.
