Who We Are

The Department of City Planning, University of Manitoba

The Department of City Planning at the University of Manitoba was founded as part of the national initiative to develop capabilities in planning and development in post-war Canada. Located within the Faculty of Architecture, it is the oldest continuing planning program in the country. Throughout its sixty-year history, the program has prepared students for work in a variety of planning fields by offering learning opportunities in both planning theory and practice. The mission of the program is to strengthen the capacity of planning to enhance the ecological sustainability, social equity and aesthetic qualities of human settlements. The studio-based program links theory to practice, and focuses on community capacity-building at the neighbourhood scale; designing ecological sustainability into urban and regional development; and the integration of the urban and the Aboriginal as a venue for practicing multi-cultural planning. umanitoba.ca/cityplanning
