The Walper Terrace is a 117 year old hotel and is a historic landmark in the Waterloo region. We hope that it highlights the rejuvenation that is currently occurring in downtown Kitchener and imparts an appreciation of our ‘resiliency’ theme to all CAPS delegates.

The first property built on this land was the Varnum Inn, built in 1820 by Phineas Varnum. In 1836 the Inn was sold to Fred Gaukel, who made the Inn larger and renamed it Gaukel's hotel (Interesting fact: Gaukel Street is two blocks away from the hotel). In 1893, Abel Walper built an elegant four-story hotel with a tower for $75,000. In 1969 the hotel was named as one of Canada's top eating establishments by Macleans Magazine. Some famous guests include:  Most of Canada's Prime Ministers, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bob Hope,  Liberace,  Duke Ellington, Louie Armstrong, Guy Lombardo, Pierre Burton, David Copperfield and  David Suzuki.
