About CAPS-ACÉAU Organization

 

Q: What is CAPS-ACÉAU

A:  The Canadian Association of Planning Students ‐ L’Association Canadienne des Étudiants en Aménagement et Urbanisme (CAPS‐ACÉAU) is a national organization representing urban planning and related interdisciplinary students in Canada. Our primary mandate is to organize and host a 3 day conference each year. Our platform is expanding and we are now offering other events to help bring planning students together to engage in mindful discussions and debate.

 

Q: What is the mandate of CAPS-ACÉAU?

A: The mandate of CAPS‐ACÉAU is to organize the annual conference. The conference, which takes place over three days, creates a platform for student exchange, dialogue, and presentations on important issues relating to progressive planning in urban, rural, and regional contexts. This is a grass‐roots participatory planning initiative that is student run with the collaboration of industry professionals.

 

Q: What is the mission of CAPS-ACÉAU?

A: CAPS-ACÉAU is a non‐profit autonomous organization that will ensure transparency through consensus based decision making, accountability through sound financial and administrative practices, and sustainable development through dedicated long‐term commitment from the board of directors once themselves conference committee members.

 

Q: When was CAPS- ACÉAU formed?

A: 1984.

 

Q: What schools have previously hosted the CAPS- ACÉAU conference?

A: University of Waterloo (2011), University of Guelph (2010), Université de Montréal, Concordia University, Université du Québec, Université Laval (2009), and Ryerson University (2008).

 

Q: What events has CAPS-ACÉAU planned for this year?

A: In addition to the annual conference we will be organizing:

-       A session at the OPPI Conference, Friday October 14th 2011 entitled “Building your Professional Profile” from 1:30pm-2:45pm.

-       World Town Planning Day event in downtown Toronto November 8th 2011.

About the CAPS-ACÉAU 2012 Conference

 

Q: What is the CAPS-AC ÉAU conference?

A:  The CAPS-AC ÉAU conference is a three day event planned by students and intended for students. The conference moves to a different planning school in Canada each year bringing together students, professors and professionals to network, collaborate and share research on various planning topics.

 

Q: When is the CAPS-AC ÉAU Conference?

A: February 2-4th, 2012.

 

Q: Where is the CAPS-AC ÉAU conference located?

A: Each year the CAPS-ACÉAU conference moves to a different planning school across Canada. The 2012 Conference will be hosted by Simon Fraser University, taking place in their downtown Campus in Vancouver.

 

Q: How do I register for the CAPS-AC ÉAU conference?

A: Registration will open in early December. Registration forms can be downloaded from the website.

 

Q: Who is able to attend the CAPS-AC ÉAU conference?

A: Current students (both graduate and undergraduate), recent graduates and professionals are

welcome to attend the conference.

 

Q: How much does it cost to attend the CAPS-AC ÉAU conference?

A:  We try our very best to keep registration costs for students as low as possible. Full conference registration is just $60.00 early bird and $85.00 regular price.

 

Q: Is any funding available to help with costs?

A: We encourage you to check with your school to see if any travel bursaries or grants are available for transportation to and from the conference as well as for accommodations. Most programs offer students funding on the condition that they make a presentation. At the CAPS-AC ÉAU conference, all students have the opportunity to present their research if they wish to do so.

 

Q: Is this a bilingual conference?

A: We want all students to be able to enjoy the conference and try our best to provide information in both of Canada’s official languages. If a significant number of students with French language register for the conference, we will make all efforts to ensure keynote presentations are simultaneously translated. In addition, students have the option to present their research in either French or English.

 

Q: Who can present at the conference?

A: Any student can present his/her research through an oral presentation or a poster presentation. Presentation registration forms will be available for download off the website. Please check back closer to registration.

 

Q: I am a professional, can I attend the conference?

A: Yes, you most certainly can! We strongly encourage the attendance of professionals. In previous years the conference has proven to be rewarding for both students and professionals.

 

Q: Are sponsorship opportunities available?

A:  Planning a conference at the lowest possible cost to students is a huge undertaking. We welcome both in kind donations and financial contributions. Please contact the 2012 Conference Planning Committee President, Jenna (Jenna.bedore@caps-aceau.org) for sponsorship opportunities.
